I’m a writer, an underwater photographic specialist, and an enthusiastic traveller. I’ve been leading trips worldwide for years. I enjoy sharing my passion for nature with people, and when you join my trip, we’ll explore the surroundings together and learn more about the area, the animals, and the nature surrounding us.
THE NIUE HUMPBACK WHALE EXPEDITION

Wouldn’t you like to join me on a sparkling gem of an island in the heart of the South Pacific?

Certainly one of the most gorgeous islands, Niue boasts many activities for the intrepid traveller. Not only can you relax on the beach or at the pool, but you can also explore. Furthermore you can dive or swim over innumerable coral reefs. Afterwards, you can enjoy a tasty South Pacific dinner while gazing up at millions of the brightest twinkling stars.

You should prepare to be awe-struck because unquestionably you’ll encounter a majestic Niue humpback whale or twenty. Also, a local guide will ensure a safe and respectful encounter, and this will allow us to observe these magnificent creatures in their element. It’s the main reason we’re here after all!

Additionally, Niue’s waters teem with a kaleidoscope of marine life, including playful dolphins and so much more, On the Niue humpback whale expedition we’ll discover colourful coral gardens, tropical fish and banded sea-snakes, for instance.

From tranquil snorkelling sessions to thrilling whale and dolphin encounters, basically every moment on the ocean surrounding Niue promises to be filled with adventure and wonder. Besides that, the land-based activities are pretty special too.

We’ll adventure together, with snorkelling trips in the many chasms (such as the Matapa Chasm) surrounding the island and hikes to the best spots.

Although it’s a small island there’s a lot to do.  Certainly, if you wish to be adventurous, we’ll do that.  However, if you’d prefer something else, i.e to relax with a good book, indeed that’s a glorious option too!

If you are a photo enthusiast, I’ll additionally be offering daily tutorials and critique sessions. We’ll do daily breath-hold exercises/stretches and get you limbered up for your whale trips.

Because it’s vital to capture stunning still photos in Niue, I’ll also assist you in setting up your photographic gear correctly for each shoot. Also, I’ll explicitly show you how to care for your gear correctly, ensuring years of use. If you shoot with a GoPro or a Sony A7siii, I can assist you with settings for those too.

I hope to see you there.

EXPEDITION FAQ's
Where will I stay during my trip?

You’ll stay on this small island in quaint and comfortable bungalows with a private bathroom, aircon, a kitchen, wifi and a tv. Alternatively, for a different price, you may decide you’d like to stay in upgraded rooms at the luxurious Matavi Scenic Resort. If you’d prefer total luxury then let me know and I’ll quote you for the best of the best on the island.

The price of $3130(USD) is for shared accommodation. The single surcharge is $3930.

What activities are included in the expedition?

For the Niue Humpback Whale expedition, the price includes four whale/dolphin snorkelling trips, each half a day in duration. These trips are interchangeable with SCUBA diving on local reefs, but only if you’d like. Other included activities are daily photo tutorials and critiques, hiking, and snorkelling- all with me. If you want to learn more about breath-hold swimming, I will also share exercises and basic breath-hold techniques, allowing you to spend a more relaxed time with the whales.

Star-gazing and star photography outings are on the cards for anyone keen. There is no light pollution so Niue is a haven for star lovers.

Where is the point of departure that I must travel to?

On the Niue Humpback Whale expedition, explorers must travel to and from Niue International Airport. This is located near the Niue town of Alofi. Flights go to and from Alofi from New Zealand on Tuesday and Saturday. Please be careful when booking and speak to me. Niue and Auckland are on different sides of the international date line. If you leave Auckland on a Saturday then you get to Niue on the previous Friday. It boggles the mind, but it’s true. You do need to be careful when booking flights and check the dates very carefully.

What specialised equipment should I bring?

You can bring your own scuba or snorkelling equipment, but they are included in the trip price. Some people like to bring their masks and snorkel for hygiene reasons and because they are light in their luggage.

What available add-ons / optional are not included in package?

Additional cultural trips and village tours are available. Extra SCUBA diving and whale trips are also available. The cost is around $350 per dive but can vary depending on where you are diving and what gear you have with you. Mountain bikes can be hired.

Are sightings / encounters on the trip likely?

Yes

Can you freedive down to the whales?

In Niue, you cannot do a deep free-dive down to the Humpback Whales as this can disturb them. You can snorkel with them and you can put your head under the water and sink down to be fully submerged, allowing you to photograph and video them.

Expedition Dates
  • Expedition dates: 30 August – 6 September 2024

NB. The flight to Niue departs New Zealand on 31 August and arrives on 7 September.

How does the catering work?

You can purchase food at local shops and prepare the meals you want, at your accommodation. We will also eat  on occasions at local restaurants if you want to join us and sample some of the incredible seafood and Pacific Island flavours. If you elect to stay at the Matavi Resort then breakfast is available at $13 (USD). There is a hotel restaurant at the Matavi too.

What qualifications / fitness / skills are required?

If you want to join me on the Niue Humpback Whale expedition, you should be swimming fit. A SCUBA diving qualification is not required, but the package includes some optional SCUBA dives you cannot participate in if you aren’t qualified. Instead, you can participate in the whale trips.

Are special permit or visa's required?
Niue operates under a visa-free policy for many countries. However, visa requirements can change, and it’s essential to verify the current entry requirements.
Is specialised equipment included in the expedition?

All diving/snorkelling equipment is included but you may want to bring your own mask and Snorkel for hygiene purposes.

Is transportation provided during the expedition?

Airport transfers and trips to other activities are included. Explorers can walk around the small town of Alofi and the beach. Bikes can be hired if you’d like.

How do bookings / cancellations work?

Bookings are done directly on Gloworm. You need to click the booking link to proceed. The expedition fee is payable when you book. Should you wish to cancel, you have the option to move to next year; alternatively, you will receive 75% back.

When should you book?

Bookings should be made as soon as possible. Niue is very popular during the August and September Humpback Whale season, and accommodation books out quickly. If you do not book quickly, we might not be able to find suitable accommodation for you. Also, the whale trips are limited to 6 people per trip.
